Magna Tiles require a little more delicacy and patience than say Lego bricks. The pieces come together through the use of magnets on their edges and can easily fall apart when you form a complex object.

If you're thinking about buying these for a child who is yet to develop a delicate use of their hands, or someone who is somewhat impatient or quick to anger, then Magna Tiles may not be the best option at this time.

Sure, Magna Tiles will help develop manual dexterity in your child, but if you get them before they're ready, your child might just throw them aside in frustration, perhaps never to try them again, or not for a few good years anyway.

The only reason you might have to purchase the Standard sets is that they're a little cheaper. But the difference in price is next to nothing when you consider that Magna Tiles are usually a lifetime investment. I have both the standard and translucent sets, and I have to say – the standard set is plain ugly in comparison.

The 32 piece sets are simply not enough. The most common complaint by customers, even with the 100 piece sets is when you really want to get adventurous, you just don't have enough pieces! And getting 32-piece sets is just not cost-effective. And what of the Deluxe (DX) set?

The Deluxe set includes a wheeled piece that your child can make little Magna Tiles cars with, and an arch and three other special shapes. Here's an example of a toy car built with this set.

Here’s what it looks like in real-life, as opposed to the usual hyped-up studio shot.

What’s Inside The Box?

The LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 comes with a total of 619 pieces. These include an assortment of rods, beams, sensors, connectors and wheels.

The Basic Building Block

You’ll notice that the basic Mindstorms unit is a beam rather than the classic LEGO block, giving it a Meccano feel. But unlike Meccano, you can simply snap the pieces together without having to use any tools.

Owing to the large number of similar-looking pieces, you’ll probably be rummaging around at lot at first looking for the right unit. But after a little experience you’ll almost intuitively know what you’re looking for.

Three Servo Motors

These servo motors will be responsible for making your robot move.

Four Sensors

The sensors will allow your robot to receive information about its surroundings. The Mindstorms NXT 2.0 comes with…

1. A light sensor, which measures levels of light and can even distinguish between different colors, giving your robot the ability to react according to any colors that you might present to it or it may chance upon during its movements around the house.

2. A touch sensor, so you can command your robot to change direction for example, when it touches another object.

3. A sound sensor, which allows the robot to respond to different volumes of sound, although you can’t get it to obey exact voice commands.

4. An ultrasonic sensor, which uses sound-beams to determine how far away your robot is from a solid object – so it doesn’t have to bump into the wall before it turns away.

The NXT Intelligent Brick

This is your robot’s brain, a mini computer that processes information from the four different sensors and according to your programming, directs the servo motors to respond by carrying out a movement, whether it be by walking, driving, changing direction, sorting balls, attacking an intruder… the list goes on.

Instruction Manual

The instruction manual is great to get you started, with step-by-step instructions to build a shooter bot, robogator, color sorter and alpha rex.

Beyond that you’re left to use your own imagination to create whatever you want. You can also purchase separate guides (yes, whole guides written just on the LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0) that show you how to build more complex robots with far superior programming.

The frustration in building your own designs is you’ll probably run out of parts to use. If you have this problem, you can always extend the Mindstorms set with pieces from the Lego Technique range, which uses the same basic unit.

What Are The Possiblities? What Can I Do With It?

The sky’s the limit. Experienced programmers have created some phenomenal robots using only what’s provided in one box of the LEGO  Mindstorms NXT.  What are some examples?

Robots that can feed pets, deal cards, write on eggs, play noughts and crosses and even solve a Rubik’s cube!

This kitchen was purchased in lieu of the PBK retro kitchen. Though pink would not have been my first choice in color, the price was fair & I was not willing to invest the cash in a PBK retro kitchen.

Having seen the PBK kitchen in person, I think it does look like a more expensive & durable set, but my kids will do just fine with the Kidkraft set & do not care what name brand is on it. 

My children are 2 & 4 1/2 (both are on the taller side) & the size is perfect. 

I (mom) assembled the kitchen in about 2 hours, taking breaks here & there to play with the kids, get snacks, etc. It was very easy to put together & the instructions were easy to follow.

The only suggestion I would make is screwing in the screws where the hinges go before attaching the hinges to open up the pilot holes a little more.

This makes it much easier to attach the hinges without trying to do a contorted balancing act holding the doors up. Trying to get the doors screwed on was the timeliest part & once I opened up the pilot holes on the rest of the doors, assembly was a breeze. 

I think the price of $134 for the oven & icebox is a fair price. I wouldn't have wanted to pay much more than $134 for this product & I would probably put it more in the $100 range because I have to assemble every piece of the toy. 

It does have a strong odor of styrofoam when first opened & I wiped it down to hopefully get some of that odor & residue off the wood… Read more

I was really torn between the KidKraft Retro kitchen and several kitchen sets from Pottery Barn. Nevermind the opinion of my kids (age 3 and 2), the most important thing to me was to get something that would look good in our house.

Ultimately I settled on KidKraft because of the price, but I was expecting ugly particle board and cheap construction. I just finished putting it together, and WOW! I'm really blown away by the quality! Very heavy duty.

My daughter got this for Christmas when she was only 14 months old. Her and my 4 year old son love to play with it.

Now that she is 18 months old, it is the perfect size for her and she is really enjoying it. It seems to be very durable/heavy duty especially compared to those hard plastic kitchens that I don't feel hold up as well.

My husband put it together easily in a small amount of time. It has quite a bit of storage for all her kitchen accessories, which was a must for us when I was looking at all the different kitchen sets.

My son is 3 and still loved to drive his cozy coupe. He is way to big for it, and i bought him a big wheel, a bike just trying to get him out of that toddler cozy coupe.

Those items didnt work, so i figured it was time for a Power Wheels. I researched the different ones, and saw what a great deal this was. I ordered it online and started showing my son YOU Tube videos of other children on it and he kept saying "is that for me".

So i knew he would be hooked. We picked it up, got him a helmet on the way out of the store and he was thrilled! He tryed helping daddy carry it inside, put it together. We've had it for going on 3 weeks now, and he has been on it every single day.

It was difficult to ride in the grass on the first try, the wheels kept spinning, so we brought him to the cul de sac, once the wheels were ruffed up from the concrete, hes able to drive on the grass in the back yard as well now.

( the wheels are the only negative, they are plastic and noisy on the concrete, but not a reason not to buy, we just thought rubber wheels would be awesome) I bought an extra battery (just knowing how my son is when he likes something, i wanted to be prepared for when the battery died out but he didnt!) and i bought the 2 hour quick charger! This toy is beyond wonderful for my son, and me!

My friend had always raved about her son's magna tiles, but they seemed kind of pricey to me and I figured my kids could play with lego's or blocks, which are much less expensive. 

For Hannukah this year, I decided to buy my three kids (4 1/2 year old girl and twin 2 1/2 year old boys) a set of 100 magnatiles. I was concerned that the boys wouldn't understand how to stack them up, but I was totally wrong. 

I got home from work last night and my nanny and three kids were building a huge tower with the magna tiles. My nanny told me that they had played ALL DAY LONG with the magna tiles and that the kids built all sorts of things with them. I was thrilled! 

They were totally worth the money – just to see my three kids sitting there all working together to build something. I highly recommend the 100 piece set. 32 pieces just isn't enough. In fact, I think we need more than 100 pieces because each of my kids wanted to build a huge Empire State Building tower!

I was a little apprehensive about purchasing these blocks, because of the price; however I am so glad I did. I'm even considering purchasing another set. I bought them for my two year old son last Christmas and he loves them. We play with these blocks every single day, building houses, train stations, rockets, etc. Yes, I said "we" even you will enjoy playing with them.

I got tired of buying birthday/holiday gifts that my preschoolers ignored. This toy was recommended to me by another mom at our preschool. My preschoolers (ages 3 and 4) love them!

They craft the pretty tiles into the most amazing shapes and structures…stuff I could never think of myself. And they are safe around smaller children and babies, too.
