Rating:  Fantastic family/strategy game in a new edition with more useful accessories!

Settlers of Catan is an absolutely fantastic family strategy game. I won't belabor my discussion of the game, except to say that my wife (only a 'casual boardgamer', not as hardcore like me) and two boys (ages 8 and 10) have been playing it for over a year, many dozens of times, with continued enjoyment.

I have successfully hooked other gamers in my family (brother in law, father) on it as well, so that it shares equal time with Monopoly in our family game marathons over the holidays. 

The big point to take away about this new edition of the game is that, without changing any rules, the edition includes some very handy extra pieces, esp. an interlocking set of holders to fit the tiles into, which helps prevent incidental dislocations of the pieces on the board (so common with the older edition).

Settlers of Catan is by far the king of the Spiel des Jahres winners. Every game can be different, as the "board" is made up of individual hexagonal pieces that you can place randomly.

There are several strategies to win, and often your strategy can change one or more times during a single game based on how you are doing and how your opponents are doing.

It really makes you think on your toes. Resource constraints, trading with your opponents, and deciding on the various avenues of growth all come into play to make this an engaging game. 

The beauty of the game is how the person in the lead can change frequently during the game. You have to be careful not to concentrate too much on one opponent while another sneaks up and wins. Settlers is a wonderful addition to your game shelf. The basis of playing revolves around economics; you gather and use five resources to build your settlements faster than the other players.

This is quantified by "Victory Points" you accumulate by building cities, roads, and amassing an army, among other things. 

The best part about this game is how free the players are when it comes to trading resources. This leads to a lot of politics and some backstabbing, which is really fun and unpredictable. Each game is randomized, so no two games will be alike.
